Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

#MentalHealthMondays!

Every Monday we are going to post about something that we feel is important or just interesting that pertains to the mental health field!

Today we are going to be breaking down for you an awesome treatment option called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing or simply “EMDR”.

Wild Mountain Clinical Counselling offers Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

EMDR is used to unlock unprocessed or blocked trauma memories. This is done by paying attention from one side to the other while thinking about a traumatic memory using either a bar with lights or tapping sensations which occur in sequence from left to right.

Sometimes we have memories so overwhelming that the filing system in our brain (hippocampus) malfunctions royally. These memories stored in their raw, unprocessed state become easily triggered until they replay and cause repeated distress. EMDR is used to treat:

-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

-Low Mood and Depression

-Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders

-Stress and Panic Attacks

-Phobias

-Abuse

-Disturbing Memories

-Addictions

-Grief

-Chronic Pain

In order to offer EMDR therapy, a clinical counsellor must have additional post-graduate training. In order to become a certified counsellor, Christel Mitchell completed EMDR Basic Training, which constituted 50 total training hours and 10 documented consultation hours.
