Here comes the sun!
Do you ever notice that when you are outside in the sunshine your mood automatically lifts? Well, it is not just you! There have been studies as to the reason behind this phenomenon.
While there is still a lot to discover and learn about the power of the sun, the strongest support for the role of sunlight in health comes from its effect on mood.
Autopsy studies have found that people who died of non-psychiatric causes in the summer, when days are longer, tended to have higher levels of serotonin (a chemical in the brain which correlates with better mood and feelings of satisfaction and calmness) than people who died in the winter when sunlight was scarce.
Doctors may not be prescribing sunlight therapy frequently yet, but we still recommend you take care of your mental health by getting outdoors and soaking up some of those rays for a wicked blast of serotonin and well-being!
